北京时间11月14日凌晨，ATP年终总决赛小组赛比赛展开争夺。赛会头号种子纳达尔出战，他在首场比赛的对手是8号种子弗里茨。经过了两盘比赛的激战，纳达尔0-2不敌对手，遭遇巡回赛3连败，美网之后纳达尔至今一胜难求。
首盘比赛纳达尔在第3局化解破发点保发，第7局纳达尔挽救2个连续破发点保发成功。前12局比赛双方各保发球局，比赛被拖入抢七。抢七局弗里茨率先完成迷你破发，取得3-0的领先。此后他一路领先，7-3赢下了首盘抢七的胜利。
第二盘纳达尔在第4局遭到破发，1-3落后对手。第6局纳达尔在发球局陷入苦战，弗里茨在第5个破发点兑现，5-1来到发球胜赛局。第7局比赛弗里茨顺利保发成功，6-1赢下了第二盘。
最终在一场耗时1小时38分钟的比赛当中，赛会8号种子弗里茨以7-6(3)/6-1战胜了头号种子纳达尔，取得了年终总决赛开门红。纳达尔自从今年美网输给蒂亚福之后，已经在巡回赛遭遇了3连败，两个多月时间里难求一胜。
